France vs Senegal Prediction, Lineups, Betting Tips & Odds | World Cup 2026 Group I

Twenty-four years ago, on the opening day of the 2002 World Cup, Senegal walked out against France, the reigning world champions, and beat them 1-0 thanks to a Papa Bouba Diop goal that an entire continent still talks about. France went home in the group stage. Senegal went to the quarter-finals. It remains one of the greatest opening-day upsets in the history of the tournament.

And now, by a draw so poetic it almost feels deliberate, the exact same two teams meet again on matchday one. France, the favourites alongside Spain, carrying the weight of redemption after losing the 2022 final on penalties, and sending Didier Deschamps off into the sunset before Zinedine Zidane takes over. Senegal, arguably the best team in Africa, the side that beat England 3-1 at Wembley last June, the side that may or may not be the rightful African champions depending on how the Court of Arbitration for Sport rules on that contested AFCON final against Morocco.

Here is the thing that should worry France. The history is not just a fun anecdote. It is a genuine warning. Senegal have pace, physicality, a Champions League-winning goalkeeper in Edouard Mendy, Sadio Mane fit and motivated, and a defensive structure that conceded just three goals in ten qualifying matches. France should win. France are the better team with the deeper squad and the more frightening attack. But there is a reason this is being called the best matchday-one fixture of the entire tournament, and it is not because anybody thinks it will be a stroll.

What to Expect

France will attack with a front line that reads like a fantasy team. Mbappe, two goals from becoming France's all-time leading scorer, leads the line with Dembele and Doue around him and Olise pulling strings. That is four attackers who would walk into almost any squad at this tournament, and behind them Tchouameni and Rabiot provide the midfield steel. The one genuine question mark is the midfield balance, where France can occasionally look light defensively when the full backs push forward. And that is exactly where Senegal will look to hurt them. When Kounde and Theo Hernandez advance, they leave space, and Mane still has the quality to punish it on the counter.

Senegal will be organised, athletic, and dangerous in transition. Pape Thiaw, who watched from the bench as Senegal beat France in 2002, knows this fixture better than anyone. Koulibaly anchors a defence that barely conceded in qualifying. Pape Matar Sarr and the midfield can go toe to toe with France physically. Nicolas Jackson leads the line with pace and movement despite his sending off against Saudi Arabia, and Mane provides the experience and the cutting edge on the counter. Senegal do not need to dominate. They need to stay compact, frustrate France for long periods, and find the one moment of quality that turns this opener into another piece of history.

Predicted Lineups

France (4-2-3-1)
Maignan; Kounde, Saliba, Upamecano, T. Hernandez; Tchouameni, Rabiot; Olise, Doue, Mbappe; Dembele

Senegal (4-2-3-1)
Mendy; Diatta, Koulibaly, Niakhate, Diouf; Camara, P. Gueye; Sarr, Mane, Diarra; Jackson

Players to Watch

Kylian Mbappe - Two goals from becoming France's all-time leading scorer and the most dangerous attacker at this entire World Cup. He carries the weight of France's expectations and the personal milestone within touching distance. Senegal's defence is excellent but stopping Mbappe across ninety minutes is a task nobody at this tournament can guarantee.

Sadio Mane - Missed the 2022 World Cup through injury and arrives at this one fit, motivated, and determined to make up for lost time. He is Senegal's most dangerous attacker on the counter and the man most likely to punish France's adventurous full backs in transition. If Senegal pull off another shock, Mane is at the centre of it.

Ousmane Dembele - A back-to-back Champions League winner with PSG and a player who stretches defences from either flank with his two-footed threat. He attacks exactly the spaces Senegal will want to protect and gives France a second devastating wide option alongside Mbappe. Senegal cannot double up on both.

Edouard Mendy - Senegal's Champions League-winning goalkeeper and a player who has produced enormous performances on the biggest stages. Against a France attack this potent, Mendy will need to be at his absolute best. One or two world-class saves from him could be the difference between a famous result and a familiar defeat.

Prediction

Prediction: France to win, both teams to score @ 2.50

France are the better team and their attacking depth should tell over ninety minutes. But Senegal are organised, athletic, carry genuine quality, and have the one thing money cannot buy in this fixture: the memory of 2002 and the belief that comes with it. France find a way through, probably through Mbappe, probably not as comfortably as the favourites tag suggests. Senegal, with their pace in transition and Mane's quality on the break, land a blow of their own. France win the opening battle, the history does not repeat, but Senegal make Deschamps work much harder than France's price suggests. A 2-1 to France with both teams scoring feels exactly right for the best matchday-one fixture of the tournament.
