"Let’s see if Chelsea are ready."
That’s how we ended the last preview.
Back then, all we had were questions.
Could Enzo Maresca manage the heat? Could this team, with an average age of 24.2, survive South American chaos, African structure, and the fire of a billion eyes watching? Could the new signings settle fast enough? Could this young, “unfinished” Chelsea side do what the greats before them had done?
We got our answer.
Not in words...
But on the pitch, under the lights of MetLife Stadium, with 81,000 fans in the stands and over 2 billion watching worldwide, Chelsea delivered a performance that didn’t just answer the big test. It tore the question paper in half.
🛣️ The Road to World Glory 🔵🏆
Chelsea didn’t walk to the trophy; they fought for it.
Group D was never going to be easy: LAFC’s speed, Flamengo’s flair, Esperance’s steel. But Chelsea navigated the group with 2 wins from 3. Pedro Neto, especially, lit up the group stage. His directness, unpredictability, and eye for a final pass gave Maresca’s side the spark it needed. Then came the knockouts:
🔹4–1 vs Benfica (AET) – A chaotic, bruising game where Nkunku, fresh from the bench, introduced himself with a crucial goal that knocked out a former European giant.
🔹2–1 vs Palmeiras – Caicedo and Fernandez ran the midfield. Palmer scored a beauty.
🔹2–0 vs Fluminense – Joao Pedro introduced himself with two exceptional goals.
🔹3–0 vs PSG – The final. The performance. The coronation.
Seven games. 17 goals scored. Just 5 conceded. 4 clean sheets. This was more than impressive. It was inevitable.
⚽ A Team That Believed When Others Didn’t 🤝💪
Cole Palmer scored twice within 30 minutes, the second a classy finish after ghosting past two defenders. Then he turned provider, teeing up Joao Pedro, who lifted it coolly over Donnarumma. Game. Done.
But it wasn’t just about goals.
Robert Sanchez, doubted, disrespected, and discarded by fans early in the season, stood tall when it mattered. His calm presence and clutch saves earned him the Golden Glove. 4 clean sheets. No goals conceded in the semis or final.
Joao Pedro finished with 3 goals in the knockout rounds.
Cole Palmer? 2 goals and an assist in the final. Golden Ball winner. And all of this… with one of the youngest average squads in the tournament.
💼 The Blueprint: Boehly’s Gamble Pays Off 💵💵

Chelsea’s journey to this point hasn’t been smooth. The club was criticized for its transfer strategy under Todd Boehly, with many calling it reckless. Boehly treated the market like a stock exchange, buying high-potential players with little first-team experience.
Even club legend Didier Drogba voiced his concerns: “I knew this club with a certain class during the [Roman] Abramovich era, but today I find it lacking. It’s very hard for me to see how they got rid of certain people. They should go back to the principles and values they had. I no longer recognize my club.”
But Chelsea stuck to their plan. They hired a coach in Maresca who understands structure and ball control. They built around youth and versatility. And slowly, the pieces began to fit. Now, just a few years into the rebuild, they’ve won two trophies (UEFA Conference League & the Club World Cup) while beating the best clubs from South America, Africa, and Europe.
Enzo Maresca believes the Club World Cup is only going to grow in importance. “I have the feeling that this competition is going to be as important, if not more important than, the Champions League.”
If that’s true, Chelsea have laid down an early marker.

But now? They leave as world champions.
“Obviously everybody was doubting us. We didn't mind. We just used that as extra motivation.” -- Cole Palmer
