Youri Tielemans was playing Champions League football before he was old enough to drive. At 16, he was already starting against Olympiacos for Anderlecht and carrying the kind of reputation that makes every major club in Europe take notice. Style of Play
Tielemans plays football with a picture of the next action already in his head. His scanning begins before the ball arrives, allowing him to receive under pressure, open his body and move possession forward while opponents are still closing him down. During his final full season at Villa, he attempted 1,102 Premier League passes with an opponent within three metres, second only to Bruno Guimarães.
His best passes do more than reach a teammate. They tell the receiver what to do next. Tielemans changes the weight and angle depending on whether he wants a forward to turn, protect the ball or attack the space behind. Over the two seasons before his United move, only Bruno Fernandes played more Premier League passes that bypassed at least four opponents.
He can operate as a number six, an eight or a number ten. Leicester used him largely as a box-to-box midfielder; Emery deepened his defensive understanding at Villa while still pushing him into advanced areas when games demanded it. Final Words
The easiest version of Tielemans's story is that he was always destined for the top. He debuted at 16, became the youngest Belgian to play in the Champions League and won his country's Player of the Year award before he turned 20. From that beginning, Manchester United can look inevitable.
The real journey was less tidy. Monaco did not become the launchpad expected of him. Leicester gave him his greatest day and then ended in relegation. His first months at Aston Villa were spent outside the starting eleven because, by his own admission, his level was not good enough. He had to understand Emery's system, strengthen the defensive side of his game and earn his way back in.
What followed explains why United moved now.
